Most Fishing charters out of Phuket are private full-day fishing trips to the best fishing locations nearest to Chalong Bay ( Ao Chalong) where the main pier, named...wait for it....Chalong Pier. This is situated at the very southern tip of Phuket Island about 300 meters from the junction of the 5 main roads connecting all of Phuket. This traffic circle is call...wait for it...Chalong Circle or locally name Ha Yaak. The main fishing destinations for Phuket Fishing are listed here: Koh Racha Yai: The closest fishing spot is the area surrounding Koh Racha Yai which is now a major tourism day trip, snorkeling and scuba diving destination. The fishing is kept well out to sea and is actually one of the main areas for trolling and catching sailfish. Other species include tuna, dorado ( mahi mahi or dolphin fish), mackerel, cobia, barracuda. The bottom fishing here at Koh Racha Yai is often very successful with many species of reef fish including groupers and snappers landed. Most boats use rod and reels however some prefer to use the more traditional hand lines to catch these fish. Koh Racha Noi: About an hour further usually trolling the distance is the almost deserted, pristine tropical island Koh Racha Noi. The waters around drop off very quickly to quite deep. The captains often find the big fish out here especially around the pinnacles. Koh Racha is a favorite anchoring spot for overnight stays with night fishing popular. Maiton Island is sometimes visited for day fishing however not so much for dedicated, experienced fishermen as this is a fantastic snorkeling spot however usuall only in the main season November-April. A short run from Maiton Island we go to Green Island ( Koh keaow ) when our Captains hear via tom toms that the sailfish are biting. On these days we rarely miss. The Drop Off: Very deep-water fishing and sounds like the place to fish, however it is very far out into the Andaman Sea way past Racha Noi between 70-80 km. Others advertise they go here but actually fall way short of the real GPS location due to time to get there and back in a day, almost impossible in cruiser boats. Phuket Fishing Charters has the only fast speed boat Phuket ProMax which can easily get there however it does cost a lot in fuel. We have found over the years that Racha Noi usually fishes well if The Drop Off is working and so most days find it more time efficient to work around Racha Noi and the pinnacles.
Koh Rok and Koh Ha. These islands are too far for day charters but are superb spots for multi-day charters.
Often spoken about are the world-famous diving destinations the Similans or Similan Islands. Again you will need at least 3 day/2 night to fish the Similans. This area is a designated marine park and so is closed for the monsoon season May to October.
Last but not least is the ultimate fishing trip, the world-class Burma Banks. hardly ever fished at all and one of the last "virgin" fishing destinations in the world. At least 7 days is required and available only mid February to mid April as The Banks is far out to sea and we must be fully confident of safe weather conditions. At night the water around the boats are boiling, teaming with life. Exciting and a "must do" for mad-keen, smelly fishermen.
